$500,000 Renovation Unveiled

by: Mark Stephens, Co-President

Work has commenced on a 5,000 square foot renovation in the main plant in Ironwood.  The new area can house up to eight presses (56-ton and smaller) and will be used for medical and reel-to-reel applications.  The “white” room will be totally self contained and will initially house five (5) 56-ton Arburg presses.  The climate controlled room will have Motan material handling and separate rooms for secondary operations such as sonic welding, pad printing and assembly.  The project will be complete in August 2007.

“We are excited to have this renovation complete” said Mark Stephens, Co-President. “ There are several medical customers that are anxious to have this room complete also.  Our plant is known to be a very clean facility, but this will take us to a new level.”

     Laser Scanning Progress

by: Kevin Nasi & Sheryl Sejbl, Project Managers

In the two years since we pioneered laser scanning, it is now an integral part of our inspection process and is widely endorsed by our customers.  We can typically scan about 75% of a part’s dimensions in one-fifth of the time compared to conventional methods.  All that adds up to significant time savings when tools are in the conditioning stage of a program.  We can, for example, see where every cavity of an eight cavity mold is in one or two days versus the two weeks it has taken in the past. Customers are getting on board also.  They can download free software from Geomagic and analyze scans themselves.  Difficult true position dimensions and warping of critical surfaces have become quick checks.

This time savings pays off in transfer programs and material changes as well.  The inspection procedures on those programs, usually under tight time frames, are greatly reduced and we can provide quick data and comparison to existing parts without inspection errors or inspection procedure interpretation.

Our next step is to begin scanning electrodes and cavity steel of our molds.  Stay tuned for information on that….
