Customer Service 101                  (When you're located in the boondocks)

When you locate a molding plant in a remote location, you have to be able to keep your customers happy…so happy that they continue to do business with you even though it is nearly impossible to fly in and out in one day. Oh, and you better not have a bunch of excuses for not delivering parts when it snows nearly 250 inches per year.

Such is the case at Ironwood Plastics, where we have (not so) conveniently located our plant in the extreme northwoods of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on the shore of Lake Superior. It starts with the right mind set…customers want to be taken care of. They don’t want to call you to get bad news. If something goes wrong, we make the call…NOW.

Customer service is under the leadership of Dena Lundin. Dena has been at IWP for 11 years and was joined by Vikki Warrick 7 years ago. Between the two ladies, they handle over 350 emails a day...that’s one every three minutes.

Some of the conveniences of doing business with IWP:

  • Most customers, except those in Mexico, can receive truck shipments in 1-2 days MAX.  Mexico is 3 days.
  • All orders for both plants are handled by Dena or Vikki at the Ironwood facility.  Customers make one phone call or email.
  • Many customers are on consignment or Kanban.
  • IQMS computer system integrates scheduling, purchasing and customer orders for both plants.  Inventory is reported live.
  • Several customers use returnable packaging.
  • Most parts are built to a customer supplied forcast with IWP carrying a 1-3 week inventory.
  • Orders are confirmed in 48 hours, max.
  • Several customer specific EDI systems are in use.

By the way, in 27 years (21,065 shifts of operation), we have missed only 8 shifts of operation due to weather. Not bad, eh?

     Training Reaches New Heights

Systematic Molding Techniques have been followed for years at Ironwood and we have worked closely with RJG developing many cavity pressure enabled molds. Ironwood has trained many of its engineers and technicians in these principles at RJG and Arburg.

Recently, Ironwood reached an agreement with RJG’s subsidiary, A. Routsis Associates to expand the number of employees that can receive training in these critical techniques. By using computer based training in tandem with hands-on activities, all of Ironwood’s employees training levels will increase dramatically. According to Training Coordinator, Liz Erickson, “I’m excited about the new material because we can get advanced training out to more people and we can target other disciplines like maintenance, tooling and engineering to broaden their knowledge base.”

Routsis offers a solid package of training that will touch every member of the Ironwood team. The Basic Injection Molding Series provides a detailed overview of the molding process. The Production Series delves into understanding plastics, establishing molding processes, mold set-up, and systematic troubleshooting. The Advanced Series reveals the finer points of decoupled molding, previously only available from RJG’s trainers. Additionally, Ironwood has agreed to serve as a beta site for new, upcoming training programs. Routsis’ Design Series 9-part course allows Design and Tooling personnel to explore many design topics in detail and the Maintenance Series affords our Maintenance Team targeted training at an entirely new level.

Our entire staff is excited about the new training program. Making a major investment in training demonstrates our commitment to ensuring we remain on the cutting edge of our industry and affords our people the chance to expand their knowledge base, resulting in higher quality product and more efficient operations for our customers.
