Ironwood Plastics Goes to
College
by: Scott Stephens, Co-President
To attract
and train new employees, Ironwood Plastics and Northern
Michigan University recently created a new injection molding
certificate program at the university in nearby Marquette,
Michigan.
Ironwood donated a 45-Ton Engel
molding machine to NMU. A new Certificate Program consisting of courses totaling 31
credits is
currently in development. Most students can complete the program in
two semesters. Required courses will include: manufacturing
processes, alignment and power transmission, industrial
measurement and fabrication, industrial practices, geometric
dimensioning and tolerancing, machinery handbook, technical
drafting (CAD), and plastic injection molding, as well as some
general university courses. Students in the program will
also receive on-site training at the Ironwood Plastics
facility.
Additionally, Ironwood Plastics offers 4 scholarships of
$500 each and 2 scholarships of $2,000 each to area students
enrolled in the new program.
“This
program will provide graduates with the knowledge and
technical skills needed for entry-level employment in the
plastic injection industry as a machine operator, maintenance
technician or mold technician,” said NMU Professor Tom
Meravi. “There are good jobs out there in this field,
including at Ironwood Plastics.”
For more information on the
program or scholarship applications, contact the NMU School of
Technology and Applied Sciences at 906-227-2190 or tmeravi@nmu.edu. |

Technical Sales
Rep Firm Hired
by: Mark Stephens,
Co-President

Ironwood Plastics would like to welcome
Alloy-Met Incorporated into our group of outstanding sales rep
firms. After an exhaustive search, a new rep firm in
the Eastern US has been
hired to represent Ironwood Plastics. Alloy-Met, from
Philadelphia, PA will represent Ironwood in seven
states: Pennsylvania, New
York, New Jersey,
Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West
Virginia. The search started in
late 2005 with a list of 300 firms. Phone interviews were held
with 45 companies and four were interviewed in person. The
Alloy- Met staff of five trained at the Ironwood facility in
August. After extensive training in the plant, the Alloy-Met
group was treated with a trip to a secluded hunting camp to
learn a little more about the U.P. (or “Yooper”) culture.
“Finding the right company to represent IWP is a
tough project” reports Mark
Stephens, Co- President. “We don’t want high
pressure sales people. They have to be technically sound and
bring something to the table. Our company is very strong in
the technical engineering aspects of injection molding- but we
are not a sales company. We have to have rep groups that can
understand our language and bridge the gap to the customer. I
think we’ve found that in Alloy-Met and they will compliment
the other three rep groups that have been with us a long
time.”

Met and the other groups representing IWP.
